50 Fantastic Photos taken with a 50mm lens

January 5, 2011 By Scott 21 Comments

In our recent poll and discussion the 50mm prime lens range came out on top as the lens you would chose if you were only allowed to ever own one. (see the outcome here). As a result we asked you to add your favourite 50mm photos to the Seven by Five Flickr Pool.

As you can see the 50mm prime lenses offer amazingly sharp images with stunning depth of field. Here is a selection of 50 great photos taken with a 50mm prime lens. As usual click on the photo to visit it on Flickr.

Great photos! I wanted to send one in too, but forgot to do it. Here are some shots I made with my 50mm f/1.4 http://www.flickr.com/photos/vannuil/tags/ef50mmf14usm/

It is quite a stretch to call most of these photos ‘fantastic’. Yes they might have been taken with a 50 prime, but some of them are obviously just new photographers trying out a f/1.8 aperture. Random bokeh of christmas lights or street lights with nothing else interesting in the picture does not usually mean ‘fantastic’ in my book. Also, a random picture of a police vehicle on Pennsylvania Ave really lacks anything even interesting in my opinion. Good beginners lens, I agree. But not good photos.

        Cracken,

Loser is the person who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “opinion”, who doesn’t understand that different people have different opinions and there are NO best opinions. Loser is a person who doesn’t know how to respect other people’s opinion.

        I share David’s opinion.

I understand where you’re coming from, and I respect your opinion, as you stated so clearly.
But to be fair, this is just a collection of photos taken with a 50mm lens, nothing more. Instead of coming here and start criticizing others’ work, like David did, I think we’ll all be better served if one offers a constructive criticism. And if we have nothing good to say, sometimes it’s best left unsaid.
As someone said below here, we’re all learning.

    Nice collection!

I’d say that about 80% of my DSLR images were taken with a nifty fifty, most times a marco lens which gives me more flexibility, as I shoot many close-ups.
And on a crop sensor camera this lens is even suitable for portraits wide open.
All in all – the lack of choice actually gives you choice.

Stunning collection of photos that show off how great a prime lens is.

I’ve always had to have one in my kit and even shoot a project dedicated to a 50mm lens but all photos shot at F/1.8. It’s been a fantastic exercise in photography and over time I have built a collection of photography that has a similar feel and style due to being shot wide open at F/1.8.

That’s a great result of 50mm lens I really like this result but here I also use that lens Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and I get too much great result also.
