When I was about seven years old I picked up my dad’s old camcorder. I thought of it as a magic machine that could capture moments, and I don’t think I was wrong. I immediately wanted to start making short movies. I just knew how to frame my shots – how to make one thing look like whatever I wanted it to. I continued to make silly movies until I was about 17 when I decided I needed to learn how to actually expose video in manual settings. I figured the best way to do that was to take up photography.
I have only been doing photography for a year or so now, but a year is a long time to learn. I consider myself an “abuser” of the internet. If there’s some photography term I don’t know the meaning of, I’ll look it up. I’ll make sure I completely understand it. I’ve spoken with a few “professional” photographers and I honestly feel like I have a better grasp on the field than they do. I don’t consider myself above them though. I just consider them less driven than me. I’m a nerd when it comes to the technical aspect of photography.
I have learned that the more contacts you have, the better. I’m constantly going online and connecting with photographers on Twitter, Flickr, 500px, and even Craigslist. I participate in a few forums where I learn and teach.
