Photo Profile: Aleksey

Hi, my name is Aleksey Khmyz, and I’m a wedding photographer in the Buffalo, NY area. I’m originally from Ukraine and grew up in a military family. I spent ten years serving my country as part of the armed forces, but when I met my wife while on a training assignment here is the USA, I decided to hang up the uniform and pursue my lifelong dream of being a photographer. I had practiced photography for almost six years as a hobby and was confident I could make my business successful.

I moved to the USA in 2012 to be with my wife and begin our family. We now have a five-month-old daughter and I could not be happier. In 2013, while waiting for my wife to finish her work in Colorado Springs, CO., I worked as a fulltime photographer for a family portrait company to get a better feel for the US market.

Recently, my wife, daughter and I moved to the Buffalo area to be closer to her family. We decide to finally open our own photography business and this is how AlekseyK Photography was created.

My style is not defined yet. I like photo journalism, but I also admire pure documentary journalism (looking for the light, incorporating the subject with the best light, creating an interesting composition, and anticipating that decisive moment for creating an impactful image), and creative editorial/commercial posing imagery (full control of the situation, when there’s no obstacle to your imagination, and it’s very interesting to push your technical and creative skills to the limit).

It’s been interesting over the last few years how my understanding of what makes a good photo has changed. As I’ve learned through repetitive practice, attending seminars and simple interaction with clients, the perfect photo is made up of many elements. There’s room for each of these elements to change and morph as my style and expertise becomes more defined and I truly discover who I am as a photographer.

It’s exciting to imagine where my future in photography will take me.
