The Black & White Photo Show Off Thread

May 17, 2012 By Scott 6 Comments

If you haven’t heard yet, Leica did something that no other camera manufacturer can get away with.

That’s right, they released a camera that only photographs in Black & White.  The Leica M-Monochrom is very similar to the Leica M9, boasting a killer 18-megapixel sensor and rangefinder design.

But is a Black & White only sensor really needed? Does the industry really need a camera that only takes Black & White photos?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Leica shooter and I love my M9.   The question should not be answered in words.  So here goes my quest to find the answer.

  • Do you prefer to shoot in Black & White only?
  • How do you feel about the new Leica M-Monochrom camera?

Tell us your feelings on Black & White photography and comment below with a link to your gallery of Black & White photographs.

Feel free to cast your vote on the poll below, answering which you prefer:  Shooting color or black & white in camera.

I just shot in B & W because it conveys all the meaning that the color can not, intimate and rational development of what your eye perceives.

I dont shoot exclusively in B&W, but tend to be drawn towards the imagery.

I am the same way Charles. Black & White is so beautiful – but i’d rather make the conversion after and have the full color original.

I like having the choice color gives you in controlling how colors are seen in your black & white images. If it were film i would have to add a filter to the lens to control things.I don’t have all the specs at hand, but from what i scanned, I did not see the options for that type of control. Artistically, it’s a nice camera, practically, its not.

I’m curious to see the stats on sales once it really hits the streets

I often, but not always, prefer B&W, which is more meditative and allusive. Most color photos are more about color than the ostensible subject.

I often shoot B&W with a camera-selectable filter in JPEG+RAW. That way i can compose and see in B&W, but still retrieve color when I occasionally want it. Doesn’t everybody? One of the great advantages of digital photography.
